Your favorite FIL enjoyed your post today, especially the collage portion. And yes I do have a creative place I go to calm my mind and disrupt anxiety. It is my garden on the side and now back of the house. At first I was not very good at it. A lot of mistakes, I mean features, lol. I'm getting better at it though. Have a safe weekend.

Thanks Michael for the great post. Something I learned along the way and that I am exploring right now exactly with collage is consistency. I did buy a sketchbook desicated to collages. I try to do one each day and I don’t expect anything from it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not but as I have no expectation, it does work. And sometimes I like what I did so I share it. And by sharing it and have praise, it gives me even more motivation to continue that practice. But also the same way: this is just an exercise, for me and without expectation.

For a long time, I worried about external validation, or how I might monetize my creative endeavors. Lately though, I've been creating because it brings me joy. Any praise is nice, but not necessary. I've come to appreciate my 9-5 as it allows me to be creative without any pressure. Thanks for sharing!

Yes I agree for the praise. What I wanted to say is just good comments can give you motivation to go further. But of course it can be a bonus and not a goal. Otherwise it kills the whole thing :)

Mike! This so well put together! What an incredible round tips, topics, and inspiration. I'm really honored to be included here. I think the collage you shared is gorgeous! I think my work is too chaotic, too busy. I'm always envious of clean minimalism, but it's just not what comes out of me. I hope you keep going with them! Thanks again!

Great piece, Michael. Plenty of resonance here, and that collage is great. I dig the modernist minimalism of it. Thanks for the shoutout.

What a great topic today!! The inner critic can have too loud a voice in our heads and can stifle our ability to try something new. As an art teacher for many years the students most plagued by this were the perfectionists in the classroom, who were good students in other subjects. Challenging subjects + practice = growth

I see my high achievers struggle with open ended tasks all the time.

It's refreshing to see more artists use writing as a way to share/document their creative process on Substack.
