Michael created these covers for himself and asked me to critique them. I don’t use AI in my work, but in the spirit of collaboration, I also didn’t want to hold that against Mike! If you read the critique again, you’ll note that I mention the AI flaws as part of what doesn’t work about the first cover (and second, to a lesser extent).
I use generative AI assets in some of my work to save on cost and time. To capture the photo in the first cover would be prohibitively expensive for me for example.
The critiques are coming from Nathaniel. They’re simply his opinions about the covers I put together. I don’t think he’s trying to persuade himself of anything. Just sharing his perspective.
I like your modifications on the last cover, and having read your description of the story the Hardy Boys theme feels right. Nice work!
Coming from the illustrator of: REWORK, REMOTE, $100 Startup (all books I've enjoyed), that means a lot!
You’d accept ‘AI’ designs? Why not just generate your own then?
Your critiques read like you’re persuading yourself to use one. None of these covers says, “Choose me out of the crowd”.
Hi Trey,

Thanks for your thoughts!
